FORCING PAPERWHITE BULBS
A few years ago, Stefan’s aunt had sent us home with a container of what looked like tulip bulbs. Not knowing much about them, I did a quick Google search and I set them in the bathroom window where plants seem happiest in our home during the winter months. I let them be and hoped for the best, filling the water periodically. Sure enough, these things made me feel like I had two green thumbs. I’ve been hooked ever since! I love the freshness that the blooms bring to a space during the colder months.
Forcing paperwhite bulbs is a nice way to bring a touch of spring into your home during the colder months. These fragrant, white blooms can be coaxed into early flowering, creating a beautiful indoor garden that brightens up your space. In this blog post, we'll explore the fascinating process of forcing paperwhite bulbs and provide you with a step-by-step guide to achieve stunning results.
What are Paperwhite Bulbs?

Although you can force the bulbs in dirt or water, I’m opting to go the water route. I filled the container with about 2 inches of pebbles and placed the bulbs root side down then added enough water to just touch the bottom of the bulbs. It’s important that you only fill the water to the point where it just touches the bottom of the bulb, any more and the bulb will rot.
Step 1: Choose High-Quality Bulbs
Select healthy and firm paperwhite bulbs from a reputable supplier. High-quality bulbs will ensure a successful forcing process and vibrant blooms.
Step 2: Prepare the Containers
Choose shallow containers or vases that are approximately 4-6 inches deep. Fill them with decorative stones or pebbles, leaving enough space for the bulbs to be nestled within.
Step 3: Plant the Bulbs
Place the paperwhite bulbs on top of the stones, with their pointed ends facing upward. Arrange them close together but not touching. The stones provide support, preventing the bulbs from toppling over as they grow.
Step 4: Add Water
Pour water into the container until it reaches just below the base of the bulbs. Ensure that the water doesn't touch the bulbs directly, as this can lead to rot. Maintain the water level throughout the forcing period.
Step 5: Choose the Right Location
Place the containers in a cool, well-lit location with indirect sunlight. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as this can cause the stems to become too tall and floppy.
Step 6: Monitor Growth
As the bulbs start to grow, you'll notice green shoots emerging. Rotate the containers regularly to encourage even growth. Within a few weeks, the paperwhite bulbs will produce clusters of fragrant white flowers.
Step 7: Enjoy the Blooms
Once the paperwhite flowers have fully opened, move the containers to your desired display location. Revel in the beauty and fragrance of these elegant blooms.
I used white pebbles because I love the simplicity.
Bulbs do best when placed in a cool (50- 60 degrees) out of direct sunlight until roots are established. You’ll be able to tell the roots are established by gently tugging on bulbs to see if you get resistance from the root growth.
Upon further research, I found claims that adding alcohol to the water once root system is established will stunt the growth of the stems and prevent them from toppling over. While I’ve never attempted it myself,
Forcing paperwhite bulbs is a rewarding and enjoyable indoor gardening project that allows you to enjoy the beauty of spring all year round. With a few simple steps and minimal materials, you can transform your home into a fragrant oasis of white blossoms. Try forcing paperwhite bulbs this season and bring a touch of nature's beauty indoors.
